Your KYPCA Event Committee never sleeps. In an attempt to provide the utmost in event and activity excellence, we pre-ran a planned Urban Donut Run visiting and verifying the quality of doughnut offerings prior to release as a club drive.
Our latest pre-run was filmed by a documentary crew saving our effort for posterity.

I have now completed my third year as your KYPCA President; 2014, 2015, 2017; and I am excited to continue on in 2018. As we celebrate what was 2017 and ring in 2018, I want to thank each of you for another great year.
Total membership numbers remain consistent. Club events and member participation continue to grow. The monthly meetings continue to have record attendance, as do our club drives. And, as usual, with the support of Blue Grass Porsche, our DE’s remain a huge success. This is all due to YOU!
With that said, if you are reading this…I have one request.
It was recently brought to my attention that we lost a member. Vaughn M. Stevens passed to the auto club in the sky at the age of 96. An excerpt from his obituary reads:
“My hobbies included working on and preparing sport cars for concours shows and auto crossings. As a member of the Kentucky Region Porsche Club of America, I was elected Treasurer for a few terms.”
While I cannot say I ever had the pleasure of meeting Vaughn, in his memory, I would like to encourage our seasoned and less active members to return to the club. You have so much to share and we all can learn from one another. Come to a Monday meeting, club drive, or social event. We welcome you.
Here’s to 2018! I wish you all a joyous and prosperous new year.

Happy Holidays! May Santa Claus be good to each and every one of you!!
What are you thankful for?
I am thankful for family, friends, and the freedoms afforded to me through this great country. I am truly blessed in so many ways. I count the friendships gained as a member of the KYPCA as one of those many blessings. Those that know me also know I love my cars, but without our club, it’s just a car. The club has allowed me to truly appreciate the cars, drive them to my limits, and even learn to work on them a bit (although Mitch and Jason usually do the heavy lifting.)
Club participation has never been stronger. As we begin to make plans for 2018, I challenge each of you to stay involved, or take the leap and get involved. Remember this is YOUR club. It can only be as good as we make it.
I want to personally thank all of my fellow officers, board members, and Presidential appointees for leading the club with enthusiasm and passion. From our always top notch DE’s to the many exhilarating drives, we work hard to provide something for everyone.
Our December meeting will be Monday, December 11 at Mellow Mushroom St. Matthews. The meeting starts at 7pm.

Major Racing Coming to Music City USA
Nashville group wants to bring major racing series to downtown Music City.
A proposed Grand Prix of Nashville race that would run through the streets of Music City has gained momentum with the addition of more investors and board members from the entertainment industry, according to Matt Crews, executive vice president of the Grand Prix Association of Nashville.
IndyCar, IMSA and even Formula E are on the group’s wish list of potential race series partners.
Crews is the key member of the association led by former Pocono Raceway executive Joe Mattioli III that hopes to stage a big-time street race in Nashville by 2020.
Mattioli is part of Mattioli family that owns Pocono Raceway. He is the son of Pocono Raceway founder and owner the late Dr. Joseph Mattioli and Rose Mattioli. He was the promoter at the Nashville fairgrounds track a decade ago. Mattioli left Pocono Raceway as a member of Pocono Raceway’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee on January 28, 2013 to pursue other endeavors.
“We’ve got some additional investors involved from the state of Tennessee and people who used to be at Nashville,” Crews said. “We want to make sure we have the right partners. It takes expertise and connections to make this happen.
“The entertainment industry is a huge piece of this. Rod Essig, who runs the Nashville CAA (Creative Artist Association) office, which is a huge mover and shaker in the Nashville community, is on board. Kix Brooks is one of our board members and he is half one of the the most popular duos in country music history (Brooks & Dunn). They are big in supporting this event.
“Nashville is an entertainment city and the race is the background noise to the party. We are a festival city.”
A key issue, however, is striking a deal with a sanctioning body. Both Nissan’s and Bridgestone’s North American headquarters are based in Nashville. But those two companies do not compete in a racing series together.
“We are still walking that tightrope to find the right sanctioning body that fits the Nashville landscape and finding the right weekend that fits at the right time,” Crew said. “The sanctioning body is an important piece to this but it’s a piece.
“I’ll even throw in Formula E. The largest selling electric car in the world is manufactured here in Nashville. So, there are a lot of different sanctioning bodies that make sense for Nashville.
“We don’t have any commitments from a sanctioning body right now.”
IndyCar president of Competition and Operations Jay Frye believes Nashville would be a great market for the series … someday.
“Would it be something we would be interested in at some point? Sure,” Frye said. “Firestone is based there, and that is important but there is nothing going on with Nashville right now as far as IndyCar is concerned.”

Saturday, October 7 marked the third annual German Festival and Bourbon Tasting at the beautiful home of Steve and Bernadette Doolin. This has truly become one of my favorite, if not my favorite, events of the year. The light rain and cooler temperatures kept a few away, but new faces joined the party. It was a nice relaxing outdoor evening with great friends, good food, bourbon, and new this year – live music. 7 bourbons were blindly sampled and much to my surprise, Maker’s Mark won the night. I suggest placing this event on your 2018 calendar, tentatively the first Saturday in October.
Thursday, October 19 “Car Wars” hosted by Patrick Strehl displaced many a new car on the Blue Grass Porsche lot with some fantastic race cars and other sought after collectables. And, although my schedule did not permit attendance this year, I am told this was the largest crowd to date. Here’s to hoping Patrick keeps this tradition going as well.
Sadly, October brought the end of our official driving schedule. We closed out the season Saturday, October 28 with the annual Huber’s Winery Drive, joining both the Central Indiana and Southern Indiana Regions. It was cold! But, the fall colors this time of year make a leisurely drive through the Knobs very enjoyable.
October also brought with it the need to elect Club Officers. Only the seats of the President and our three Board Members are term limited. As the first year of this term comes to an end, I have agreed to fulfill the optional 2nd year. A quorum, presiding at our October membership meeting, decided to keep the remaining elected officers intact as well – VP, Jeremy Miller; Treasure, Richard Darnell; Secretary, Robert Klein, Board Member, Jim Doll. Bobby Bailey assumes the Web Chair position. And, T.H. Morris and Anthony Minstein remain as Activity and Membership Chair respectively. Steven Rountree and Ed Hessel depart as their 2-year terms as Board Members come to an end. We will elect 2 new Board Members at the November membership meeting.
SAVE THE DATE – our January Holiday Hangover Party will be Saturday, January 13. Details will follow as things come together.
Lastly, as we prepare the 2018 calendar, suggestions for our monthly membership meetings and other club related activities are appreciated. Preferred meeting location criteria include: a FREE meeting room, good parking for the Porsche, and quality affordable food. Please e-mail me: millermd@twc.com.

KYPCA and Blue Grass Porsche put on another fabulous DE! Our September Fall Fastival did not disappoint.
September 8-10 we once again took over Putnam Park for our Fall Fastival DE. The weather was fantastic. For all of you that attended, thank you. A BIG BIG thank you to Randy Biery and the Blue Grass Porsche staff for their continued support without which these DE’s would not be possible. PCNA Hot Shoes John Lewis and Cass Whitehead were again on hand the entire weekend providing on track instruction and ride-alongs.
Thanks must also be given to the many club members who continually invest their time to plan, run, and instruct. There are too many to mention. But, special thanks goes out to Jeremy Miller, Mark Bos, Richard Darnell, Mark Lichtefeld, Chuck Hicks, Dan Stewart, T.H Morris, and Gene and Peggy Hoffman.
Start planning for the June 2018 DE. There will be approximately 15 slots available for Friday’s Instructor Certification. This is only offered every other June. Stay tuned for future updates.
Now bring on October. Steve and Bernadette Doolin will be hosting their 3rd Annual German Festival and bourbon tasting at their home October 7 at 4pm. And, we will once again round out October with our Annual Huber’s Drive.

Where is the time going?!? This year is racing by. Our KYPCA activities have been better than ever. If you have yet to join us, there are still plenty of activities left.
August was great! But, September promises to be even better!! The Fall DE is right around the corner; September 8, 9, 10 at Putnam Park. There is still time to register. Or, just come up for the day, check us out, and stay for dinner and drinks at our host hotel, the Cambria.

Wow! July was packed with plenty of Porsche activities – The Goodwood Brewery Tour, Keeneland Concours, and Patoka Winery visit were all well attended. Each provided spirited drives and plenty of Porsche comradery.
Don’t forget to join us Friday, July 28 as we close out the month with an annual favorite, making an ice cream run to Polly’s Freeze.
The month of August promises to be just as busy.
PLEASE note an important change. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the August Club meeting will now be at Aspen Creek.
Mark your calendars now for our next DE, the Fall Fastival, September 8, 9, 10. Registration opened Sunday, July 23 at 9am.

KYPCA Activity Report for August 2017
The driving season is starting to wind down here in the Bluegrass State with November 1 as our season cut-off. All the more reason to have an event filled August!
We kicked off the month with a backyard pool party at the home of Anthony and Vycki Minstein. A large gathering of members had BBQ dinner, cocktails and evening swim. Members enjoyed backyard mingling and sitting by the lovely pool setting. The street was packed with three blocks of Porsches, joined by one Aston Martin and a 1977 Toyota Land Cruiser. The evening beginning with members standing out front talking cars.
Our 2nd event, a week later, was a drive out to Patoka Lake winery. Event Chairman TH Morris led a group of 12 cars out into the back roads of southern Indiana. After sampling some of the (actually decent) wines, the group had BBQ lunch next door.
Not letting weeds grow under the tires, the club drove south the following weekend for the “Chihuly at Maker’s Mark,” exhibit. Three of the featured works are newly made and the others are works famed sculptor Dale Chihuly has installed in other exhibitions (most often at botanical gardens). We viewed the exhibition in combination with a late afternoon distillery tour, catching the sculptures in evening light. Some members chose to stay for a gourmet dinner, while others chose to return home, avoiding driving on the rural roads in the dark.
Our final event of the month was a visit to the National Corvette Museum (NCM) track where a small but determined group went out for touring laps during lunch break for an in-session DE, a great opportunity to visit with our members residing in the southern part of the state.
Meanwhile, in preparation for our own DE September 9/9 to 9/10, two members of our executive board, Robert Klein (Secretary) and Anthony Minstein (Membership Chair) drove out to Watkins Glen, NY spying out the competition running in the NorthEast Region HPDE. Besides sampling great Italian food, eating ice cream and viewing Mark Twains grave, Robert and Anthony found time to run cars on the magnificent Watkins Glen raceway, truly one of the best in America.
