President’s Report December 2014

Jason Miller – KY Region President

The Holidays are here.  Commercial America seems to celebrate earlier and earlier each year.  But, let’s not lose the meaning…Family, Friends, Love, Togetherness, Sharing, etc.  In the hurry-up world of today we often don’t allow ourselves to slow down and just be thankful.  I for one, can truly say I am a blessed individual, surrounded by love and friendship.

I count my KYPCA friends as an extension of my family, and I am grateful for the relationships the club has allowed me to build.  As your President, I am often the first point of contact.  I receive phone calls and e-mails on a daily basis from club members and non-club members alike.  Most inquiries pertain to club events, trying to connect with a certain member, private-party car inspections, or hunting down a long lost vehicle.  However, in mid-October I received an e-mail I will never forget.

The e-mail was from Tracy (last name omitted for privacy) with the first paragraph reading: “Hi, I have a strange request.  I am trying to locate a place where I can rent a Porsche for the weekend.  My husband loves Porsche and has always dreamed of driving one.”

This was not a strange request.  I too, like many of you, shared that dream at one point in my life.  And, every time I get behind the wheel of a Porsche the excitement is still there.  But, the e-mail went on to read:

“Leo is 45 years old and was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in May of 2012.  He has had surgery and has been receiving Chemotherapy treatments since July 2012.   He had a CT scan on October 3rd and we rec’d the results of that scan Monday of this week, and we were told that the cancer is still growing, even while on treatment and this was his last option for effectiveness.   His Oncologist and him have talked and decided to stop any further treatments and try to live the rest of his days the best that he can.  We have no time table of when the Cancer can take him from this earth.  I asked him if he had a “bucket list” of any sort and he said no not really, and that he would just love to get in a Porsche and drive it.  I am asking you if you and the Porsche Club would in any way be able to help me make this a dream come true for him.  He is an amazing husband, father, and friend.”

Upon receiving this e-mail, I shared it with a few club members.  Matt Innes immediately jumped at the opportunity to help, offering hot laps as a passenger in his 944 Turbo during the 10/10ths event on October 25th and 26th at Putnam Park Road Course.

Leo and Tracy made it to the track on the 26th.  Not only did Leo get hot laps in Matt’s 944, he drove it during the Noon Touring time and had rides in many other cars as well.  Both Tracy and Leo shared that it was wonderful experience.

I personally could not be prouder that when called upon the club came through in such a big way.  As I have always said, it’s not just about the cars, it’s the people driving them.  Well done Matt!  We all have so much to be thankful for, be sure you slow down and take it all in.

Our December meeting will be Monday, December 8 at Mellow Mushroom.  The meeting starts at 7pm, but many arrive as early as 6:30.

Mark your calendars and don’t forget to RSVP for the After Holiday Party Saturday, January 17, 2015.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

Jason Miller

President’s Report, November 2014

Jason Miller – KY Region President

Saturday, September 27 was both a sad and glorious day at the same time. You see, for almost two weeks since returning from our September DE I had considered buying another Porsche. I had the DE bug bad! And, my 2003 base boxster just wasn’t cutting it any longer. I definitely got my monies worth out of the boxster, as she allowed me to get introduced to DE on the cheap, but an upgrade was in the near future.

Over those two weeks my wife and I discussed this more than she liked. What to do? Buy a new to me Cayman and daily drive it as well as track it? Or, sell The White Elephant, aka the 2007 Targa 4S with only 14,500 miles? The horror! How could I sell the Targa? This was the car I was going to keep forever.

Until…one Wednesday evening after work I stopped by Bluegrass to look at a 2014 Base Cayman. I never made it to look at that particular car. Instead, my eye caught a 2015 Guards Red Cayman GTS. Moments later I was convinced to take a test drive. The car was amazing! The next day Holly, my wife, went to check out the car. She liked it as well. Four days later, on that momentous Saturday, both the Boxster and Targa were gone and I became the proud owner of a new GTS.

While parting with the Targa was difficult, the first drive in the GTS reassured me that this was the right move. Bring on spring and my first DE of next season!

I digress. On to club related news. The October membership meeting was a success, as we invaded the Maserati showroom at Bluegrass for pizza and beer. A quorum of members not only convinced me to give “one more year” as your KYPCA President, but the other elected officers remained intact as well. One new Board Member, Edward Hessel, was elected.

A November drive is in the works. Be on the lookout for an e-mail blast with details soon. Also, discussions for our January Holiday Hangover Party have begun. This will be mid-January as usual and details will follow as things come together.

On a sad note, the Saturday morning Breakfast Social at Steak ‘n Shake has been cancelled due to lack of participation. This will certainly be re-visited at a later date to gage interest in re-kindling the gathering.

Lastly, as I plan meeting locations for next year, I am open to suggestions. Preferred criteria includes: a FREE meeting room, good parking for the Porsche, and quality affordable food. Please e-mail me: [email protected]

Our November meeting will be Monday, November 10 at el Tarasco. The meeting starts at 7pm, but many arrive as early as 6:30.

Wow! September was a GREAT month. It started with the best club drive I personally have ever been on, and the behind the scenes “hard hat” tour of Buffalo Trace Distillery wasn’t bad either. You know it’s an awesome drive when your wife screams and reminds you, “We have a daughter at home that you say you love!!” Thanks Edward and Stasia Hessel.

The drive was followed up with our largest Monthly Membership Meeting to date at Bravo’s. New and old faces came together to break bread, have a drink, and you guessed it….talk about THAT drive.

As if this wasn’t enough, September 12-14 KYPCA once again took over Putnam Park for our Fall Fastival DE. The weather was fantastic, a bit chilly in the mornings, but fantastic. If you have yet to experience one of our DE’s, it is truly a must. For those of you that were there, thank you for your continued support. A BIG thank you to Randy Biery and the Bluegrass Porsche staff for their continued support without which these DE’s would not be possible. Thanks must also be given to the many club members who gave up their time to plan, run, and instruct. If you see Randy, his Bluegrass staff, or any of the club DE staff please take a moment to express your gratitude. Go ahead and mark your calendar for the June 2015 DE, honestly there is nothing more fun.

Now bring on October. The club has purchased 50 tickets to the French Lick Concours Sunday, October 5. There will be a club drive and tickets will be handed out the morning of. Check your e-mail for further details. October will be rounded out with our Annual Huber’s Drive on October 25 with CIR PCA.

Our October meeting will be Monday, October 13 at Bluegrass Motorsport. The meeting starts at 7pm, but many arrive as early as 6:30. Pizza and beer will be served.

Okay, here we go.  Focus.  Speed.  I am speed.  One winner, forty-two losers. I eat losers for breakfast.  Breakfast?  Maybe I should have had breakfast?  No, no, no, focus. Speed. Faster than fast, quicker than quick.  I am Lightning.

Yes, I am quoting Lightning McQueen.  The advantages of having a seven year old in the house – I still get to watch cartoons.  And, because of this movie, my daughter loves cars, racing, and going fast.  In fact she watches F1 with the same attention as if it were My Little Pony.  I’m not saying she is going to be Danica Patrick, and yes I am coming to the realization that once she reaches 16 I may be in trouble.  But for now it is pretty cool.  She loves Porsches and can identify each model.

Speaking of fast, the green flag is out, 8 months down, 4 to go.  2014 is motoring by.  September and October promise to be great months packed with plenty of Porsche Club activities.

September 6: Buffalo Trace Distillery Tour and Lunch

September 8: Monthly Membership Meeting @ Bravo’s

September 12-14: DE Fall Fastival Putnam Park

October 3-5: French Lick Concours

October 13: Monthly Membership Meeting @ Bluegrass Motorsport

October 25: Annual Huber’s Drive with CIR PCA

Please note the October Membership Meeting will be held at the dealership.  This meeting will be to nominate YOUR Club Officers for 2015.  Voting will occur in November.

As you may know Toyo Tire is the official sponsor of our PCA Driver’s Education Program. Please e-mail me your nominations @ [email protected].  I will tally and send the name getting the most nods for each category.  The deadline for submission is Wednesday, September 17, 2014.

President’s Report August 2014

Jason Miller – KY Region President

Saturday, July 19, 7:30 am.  I look out the window, it is mostly cloudy.  I check the weather forecast – 10% chance of rain and the weatherman says, “mostly dry today.”  Thinking to myself, yesterday there was a 0% chance of rain and it rained most of the day.  What to do?

Today is the 10th Anniversary of the Keeneland Concours and we are supposed to embark on our annual drive at 10:00 am.  While the Concours is a “Rain or Shine” event, our drive is typically a “Shine” only event.  So Holly, Grace, and I decide to leave the Porsche in the garage and head to the DQ in our Lincoln SUV expecting to be met by no one.  We’ll just grab a late breakfast, maybe a movie, and return home.  To my surprise four P-cars arrive in the mist.  We all discuss the weather, admire the cars (not the Lincoln), and decide to head toward Lexington.

For 2014 a single automaker was not honored, but rather each class winner from the past 10 years was invited back, with a featured winner’s circle reunion.  This was set to be the best of best.

Upon arriving to Keeneland, it was clear the weather had turned people off.  Attendance was noticeably down.  The off and on mist, at times a more steady rain, proved to be a nuisance causing many to leave shortly after arriving.

Admittedly, I was disappointed to not have the opportunity to view all of the fine automobiles on display.  But, I did have the opportunity to chat with friends new and old.  And, although I was driving a Lincoln SUV with a few Porsches, it was an enjoyable spirited drive.  All in all, it was a fantastic Saturday!

This is truly why I enjoy the KYPCA – good activities with great friends “Rain or Shine.”  Have you participated in a drive or other KYPCA event this driving season?  If not, what are you waiting for?  Check the calendar.  There are still plenty of planned events coming up and there will be more added.  Have an idea for a drive or event?  Share it with us and we will do our best to make it happen.  This has been our most active driving season to date, at least during my time as a KYPCA member.  Let’s keep it going.

Our August meeting will be Monday, August 11 at El Tarasco in St. Matthews.  The meeting starts at 7pm, but many arrive as early as 6:30.

Another Summer Heat in the books. KYPCA DE’s keep getting better. And, if you have yet to participate either as a driver or simply as a spectator, you are missing out.

Our June DE at Putnam Park was the largest to date with 168 registered participants. Thanks to Randy Biery and the Bluegrass Porsche staff for their continued support without which these DE’s would not be possible. The weather was fantastic and there were no major incidents. Friday’s Instructor Training turned out 16 new Certified Instructors. PCNA Hot Shoes John Lewis and Cass Whitehead were on hand the entire weekend providing on track rides in the new Macan and Boxster S. The new Macan, what a car!

Thanks must also be given to the many club members who gave up their time to plan, run, and instruct. There are too many to mention. But, special thanks goes out to Jeremy Miller, Mark Bos, and Richard Darnell.

Mark your calendars now for our next DE, the Fall Fastival September 12-14. Registration opens July 27 at 9am. Just a reminder, the June DE sold out in 20 days.

Carrying over the success from our June DE, the June Club meeting at Captain’s Quarters was also the best attended meeting of the year. All in all, club participation continues to rise. The summer months are full of activities, giving plenty of reasons to keep those Porsche’s moving. For a complete list of upcoming activities check the calendar in the Pacesetter. Our next activity is the Winzerwald Winery Drive on Saturday, June 21 – as I write this we have 20 participants RSVP’d.

Our July meeting will be Monday, July 14 at Buffalo Wild Wings in St. Matthews. The meeting starts at 7pm, but many arrive as early as 6:30.

Brake, Off, Turn in, Open, Open, Gas, Gas…..

I still hear these words in my sleep.

The weekend of April 25-27 KYPCA’s very own Jedi Master – Gene “Obi-wan” Hoffman, Robert Klein, and myself made our presence known at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Gene driving as an instructor, seemed to know everyone in the lot after only the first day – he never meets a stranger.

Co-hosted by the Mid-Ohio Region and the Eastern Buckeye Region PCA, the weekend was fantastic. Cold, but fantastic! Just as Gene knew everyone after the first day, everyone knew me also, as I showed up in shorts and a t-shirt. There was a 20 degree temperature swing. If you find yourself curious, I did pack warmer clothes.

Everyone we met was extremely welcoming and helpful. We met the Presidents of both Regions Betsy MacDonell (MORPCA) and Greg Brady (EBRPCA). Greg turned out to be my Instructor for the weekend. Also driving in the event was Zone 4 Representative, Michael Soriano. Michael and his wife were able to provide some much needed information on the upcoming Parade which will be held in French Lick, Indiana.

As this was only my second track event, the first one being at Putnam Park last September, I must admit there was an element of fear. The experienced driver will tell you “Putnam is forgiving, Mid-Ohio is not.” “Mid-Ohio is a very technical track.” “Anyone can go fast in a straight line, but how do you handle the turns?” I knew my limitations and addressed them one at time session after session. My speed improved, as did my comfort. The boxster held up and I was able to drive it home (the only trophy I need). I had no off-track excursions. I passed a new corvette in the turns and never saw it again, that particular session anyway. And, I got bumped up to Yellow at the end of the weekend. Robert and I, partially quenched our need for speed.

Gene, Robert, and I are ready for Putnam this June. Are you? While I loved the Mid-Ohio Track, I believe nothing compares to the KYPCA overall event. As one of the only clubs with Dealership presence, the social aspect of the KYPCA DE alone cannot be rivaled. Give it a try and you’ll be hooked – I am!

Our June meeting will be Monday, June 9 at Captain’s Quarters.

The April Wine Tasting was a huge success! Thanks again to Joe and Jane for hosting a fabulous night. There were 30 guest in attendance. It was great to see so many new faces, and of course, the old ones weren’t bad either.

If I do say so myself, 2014 has been a great year so far for club participation. And, it keeps getting better. With the help of our new Activities Chair, T.H. Morris, we have several new events planned. Participation is the key, and we are open to any and all suggestions. Here is a quick rundown of our current plans:

– May 10 Owensboro Barbecue Festival
– May 12 Monthly Membership Meeting @ Matt’s House
– May 24 Saturday Morning Breakfast Social
– June 6-8 KYPCA DE @ Putnam Park
– June 9 Monthly Membership Meeting @ Captain’s Quarters
– June 21 Winzerwald Winery Drive
– July 19 Keeneland Concours
– August 23 Carmel Artomobilia
– Date TBD Dance Lessons and Cocktails

Our new website is up and running. The address is unchanged – https://kypca.org. Check it frequently for the monthly Pacesetter and Calendar updates for Activities.

Look for the June President’s Report for what I hope to be an exciting, but uneventful, recount of my first trip to Mid Ohio.

Let’s keep driving!

Presidents Report April 2014

Jason Miller — KY Region President

Winter has not wanted to let go. But, Spring is finally here. In an effort to influence Mother Nature, 22 club members (12 p-cars) recently embarked on the Bourbon Trail. A fun, and somewhat educational, time was had by all (Pictures in this month’s Pacesetter).

The month of April promises to be a busy month. Cars & Coffee is back – the second Saturday of each month at Captain’s Quarters. The Kentucky Derby Festival is getting underway. And, we will be having our next Club Event – April 19, Joe and Jane Galownia will be hosting a Wine Tasting at their home (See Pacesetter for details).

April also brings with it the start of Track Season. Those of you that know me also know I am not mechanically inclined. I work on people, not cars. Hence, when I bought my ‘03 Boxster for the track, my intention was to also learn how to “work” on the car. With my first track dates confirmed for April 26-27 at Mid-Ohio I had “work” to do.

My Christmas list had included a helmet, driving shoes, and magnetic numbers. But, my To-Do list included replacing all four rotors, the front brake pads, and mounting new rims and tires. To most of you this is simple stuff, but honestly, I’ve changed a tire once in my life. As I have always done during my 37 years on this earth, I enlisted the help of my dad. He can do anything! Or, at least he is willing to try. So one early Saturday morning my dad arrived. I had everything out and ready to go. We both thought this would be a two hour job. He installed brakes and rotors on American cars with no problem. And, I had watched several You Tube videos of guys working on Porsche’s. This is where the beauty of our club comes in.

The KYPCA membership is a group of diverse individuals with different backgrounds, professions, and life goals. But, there is one common interest – the love for all things Porsche. Our two hour job turned into an all day job – Quality Time with my dad. But over the course of that day I e-mailed, texted, and called several fellow PCA’ers. Dan Stewart brought over an impact wrench. Edward Hessel confirmed that yes we had indeed put the rear rotors on the front and that no the front rotors would not fit the rear. In our defense the rotors were not labeled Front/Rear, only Left/Right. And, Mark Boss texted me the proper torque for the wheels. In the end we successfully completed our task and I am confident I could do it again.

I am thankful for the friendships I have made within the club. The cars bring the people to the club, but the people make the club!

Our April meeting will be Monday, April 14 at Café 27 in New Albany. Mark your calendars – the May meeting will be held at Matt Innes’s home.

Stay tuned for more Boxster Trials and Tribulations 

President’s Report – May 2013

Greetings!

Just to remind you all this month’s meeting will be at my house! It’s a great opportunity to drive your cars out to Prospect. We can get about 15 cars on the driveway and there is more room on the street as being a cul-de-sac there is very little traffic. We will be grilling out and on the menu are burgers, brats and Lucy’s famous cedar wrapped salmon. We have two limited addition 911 Club Coupe models to give away as door prizes so make sure you attend the meeting to be in with a chance of winning one of them.

This year I have been following F1 more than I have in the past few years and I like what I’m seeing; some fun wheel to wheel racing that takes you back to the Prost and Senna days! I hope the rumors of Webber leaving F1 after this year are not true as I want to see more great action from him and Vettel battling it out.

First track run of the year went reasonably well with a slight mishap on Sunday when my left rear center bolt which holds the bearing and hub decided to come loose going round turn 10 at Putnam. Not a good feeling, fortunately I was able to pull off the track and save the wheel from fully detaching from the car. Lesson learned – check every nut on the car each time you come in, a wise thing to do on a nearly thirty year old 944!

I popped into Bluegrass Motor Sports on Saturday to see the official launch of the new Cayman and had the privilege of test driving one of the manual S’s. What impressed me the most was that it will blip the gas for you when you shift the gears down; it sounds really cool and would be very useful feature on the track.

This month’s Porsche fact is close to my heart!!!
